Dialysis in Kenya for visitors: haemodialysis and PD support

In short: Nanto Med pairs visiting patients with a partner haemodialysis unit in Nairobi, helps source or import peritoneal dialysis (PD) fluid, and introduces a consultant nephrologist. Contact us at least six weeks before you travel.

Coming home for a wedding, a family visit or a holiday should not mean worrying about treatment. Nanto Med is a Kenyan dialysis supply company based in Nairobi. We know the dialysis units, the specialists and the regulator, and we point you to the right people.

Haemodialysis or HDF while visiting Kenya

We pair you with a partner dialysis unit in Nairobi and make the introduction. The unit confirms your sessions with you directly, and you pay the unit at its own rate.

What the unit will usually ask your home unit for: a recent treatment summary, your dialysis prescription, recent blood results, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV screening, and your travel dates.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) while visiting Kenya

PD is more challenging to arrange, because PD fluid is heavy and some brands are not registered in Kenya. We work it out in three steps.

  1. Local supply first. If your fluid, or an equivalent your doctor approves, can be sourced in Kenya, we arrange it. This is usually the cheapest route by far.
  2. Import when it is not available here. We apply to the Pharmacy and Poisons Board for a named-patient import permit on your behalf and arrange shipping and customs clearance to where you will stay. The regulator makes the decision, so approval and timing are not guaranteed. We give you the full cost in writing before anything is committed.
  3. A specialist introduction. We connect you with a consultant nephrologist in Nairobi who reviews your plan before you travel and can see you if anything goes wrong during your stay.

How it works

  1. Tell us your travel dates, where you will stay in Kenya, and your treatment: haemodialysis, HDF or PD.
  2. We tell you what is possible and, for PD supplies, send you a written quote.
  3. We introduce you to the unit or specialist, and your home team sends them the clinical documents.
  4. You travel. Your Kenyan unit or specialist is your contact for treatment during your stay.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get dialysis in Kenya as a visitor?

Yes. Haemodialysis is available at private dialysis units in Nairobi. Nanto Med puts you in touch with a partner unit in Nairobi, which confirms your sessions and treatment details with you directly.

How far ahead should I plan dialysis in Kenya?

At least six weeks ahead for peritoneal dialysis (PD) and three to four weeks for haemodialysis. Shorter notice is sometimes possible but never guaranteed.

Can I get PD fluid in Kenya?

Sometimes. Some PD fluids are not registered in Kenya. We check local supply first. If your fluid is not available, we apply to the Pharmacy and Poisons Board for a named-patient import permit and arrange shipping and customs clearance. The regulator makes the decision, so approval and timing are not guaranteed.

How much does dialysis in Kenya cost for a visitor?

Haemodialysis sessions are paid directly to the dialysis unit at its own rate. For PD, the cost depends on whether fluid can be sourced locally. Air-freighting three weeks of PD fluid can cost several thousand US dollars. We send a written, all-in quote before anything is committed.

Will travel insurance cover dialysis in Kenya?

Usually not, because dialysis treats a pre-existing condition. Check with your insurer and plan to self-pay.

Can I carry PD fluid in my luggage to Kenya?

Speak to your airline and your doctor first. Kenyan rules on importing medical products apply to anything you bring into the country.

Can I see a kidney specialist while visiting Kenya?

Yes. We connect you with a consultant nephrologist in Nairobi who can review your plan before you travel and see you if needed during your stay.

Do you work with dialysis clinics and travel teams abroad?

Yes. Home dialysis units and travel coordinators can contact us directly at med@nanto.com and we connect them with the right unit or specialist in Kenya.
